Peter Lundberg, Executive Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), met with Sweden’s former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ann Linde, this week to brief her on RWI’s development of the International Humanitarian Law Compliance Monitoring Database (ICMD) — a new initiative aimed at strengthening respect for IHL through evidence-based monitoring and increased transparency. Former minister Linde expressed her endorsement of the initiative and published the following message on social media:
“Idag träffade jag @raoulwallenberginst och deras verkställande direktör Peter Lundberg, som presenterade ett djärvt nytt initiativ: www.icmd.se — Jag tror att detta kan bli ett verkligt genombrott för att övervaka efterlevnaden av internationell humanitär rätt i världen
.
“Today I met with @raoulwallenberginst and their Executive Director Peter Lundberg, who presented a bold new initiative: www.icmd.se — I believe this could become a real breakthrough for monitoring compliance with international humanitarian law worldwide 🌍
In a world drowning in conflicts, ICMD will help map the human costs of war and highlight patterns and trends regarding violations of humanitarian law – realities that are all too often ignored. This is more than innovation — at best, it is also a lifeline for accountability.
Sweden, the EU, and everyone who seriously defends humanitarian law must take responsibility and support this. The system is starting to crack. ICMD may be a small but important part of the glue needed to mend it. Important work in the spirit of Raoul Wallenberg!”
